【明報專訊】In 像貓這種動物,咱們中間誰沒有認清?(葉紹鈞,《以畫為喻》), the underlined phrase 像貓這種動物 is an object in the English version (Who wouldn't recognise an animal like a cat?). By word order, therefore, the Chinese sentences are very different from the corresponding English sentences. The question that arises is: What is a subject in Chinese? Before turning to the answer to this question, it is necessary for us to be clear about what a subject is in English.
