Editorial : US Cold Civil War intensified by 'voter fraud' row

【明報專訊】The formal vote for the next president by the Electoral College has long been a matter of routine in the United States, but yesterday (December 14) it caught unusual attention. Refusing to concede defeat, US president Donald Trump has launched the most ridiculous manoeuvring against democracy in the contemporary history of the US. He has attempted to invalidate millions of legitimate popular votes by legal and political means. With its ruling last week, the US supreme court has given the final word to rebuke the unfounded accusations of so-called election "fraud". The formal affirmation of Joe Biden's election by Electoral College vote has marked the end of Trump's quest to overturn the election results. However, one has to wait and see whether all this, as claimed by the Biden camp, will affirm the resilience of American democracy. Trump's lies about voter fraud have inflicted deep wounds on US democracy. Even though political violence of a large scale has been absent since the election day, it does not mean Trump's populist manoeuvring has not deepened the social divide. Rather, a "Cold Civil War" has already taken shape. Democracy and politics in the US can hardly go back to the days before the Trump era.
