Mona's Musings : How not to kill a lost insect

【明報專訊】Before a storm, it is not unusual to see insects swarming towards the light source in a house. Moths, flies, bees, beetles and their fellow companions perform spiral dances around the light bulb, adding a faint buzz to the soundscape. Disgusted, many would instantly send a fatal slap towards the poor creatures. However, if one observes a light-encircling insect for long enough, one would soon realise that it is rather disciplined. Very rarely does it attempt to explore the house, or to disturb the much-annoyed human-standers-by. Diligently, it hovers over the light until fatigue or the heat of the bulb puts an end to the buzzing song it is orchestrating.
