周街學英文﹕Perspective 與 prospective

【明報專訊】Perspective 與 prospective的拼法十分相似,但在意思上卻不一樣。Perspective 是名詞,有「看法、觀點」的意思;而prospective作為形容詞,有「預期的或未來的」之意。請看以下例子(例子來自Leeds Collection of Internet Corpora):

Perspective

1. From a law enforcement perspective, it is worrisome to have untrained people.(執法的角度)

2. From both a national and global perspective, this really is a landmark conservation event.(世界觀)

3. I want to say that I understand your perspective and respect it as reasonable.(個人想法)

Prospective

4. The market has already figured out a pretty good way of expressing the energy efficiency of a home to a prospective buyer.(準買家)

5. As a result, and to make things more attractive to prospective parents, choristers holidays were somewhat lengthened. (準父母)

6. There is nothing inherently wrong with prospective teachers learning good pedagogical techniques.(準老師)

再看以下對照例子:

A shortage of housing forces employers to offer higher wages so that perspective workers can fight their way into the local housing market. (╳)

A shortage of housing forces employers to offer higher wages so that prospective workers can fight their way into the local housing market.(prospective為形容詞,放在名詞workers前,表達準員工之意)(ˇ)

I am good friends with his daughter, and that was another weird prospective. (╳)

I am good friends with his daughter, and that was another weird perspective.(perspective為名詞,放在形容詞weird後表達奇怪觀點之意) (ˇ)
