To put someone's nose out of joint

Thelma: Did you go to Carina and John's wedding on Saturday?

Cindy: No, I got an invitation but I couldn't go. I was away on a business trip I couldn't postpone.

Thelma: Oh, bad luck! It was a really swish affair. And the dinner and dance in the evening was fabulous.

Cindy: I'm sorry I missed it. But I did hear a rumour that the bride was annoyed about something.

Thelma: Oh, I know what you mean. Delia Wynne mentioned to a friend at the dance that she had just got engaged to Neil Borrie, you know the top DJ on the Star channel breakfast show. That's all people could talk about after that.

Cindy: So Carina wasn't best pleased?

Thelma: Oh no, it really put her nose out of joint. She felt it spoilt her day.

Cindy: Oh, she'll get over it.

To put someone's nose out of joint 一個人的鼻子給打歪了,當然沒面子,引伸其義,to put someone's nose out of joint 即「挫某人意氣」、「使某人嫉妒、失望等」,例如:(1) The girl put his nose out of joint when she refused to dance with him (2) The boss put my nose out of joint by turning down my proposal
