英語文法學堂:The Baptism of SARS

【明報專訊】Many years from now, how will the Form 5 students of this year be remembered?

I suspect many will say that they were the first batch of HKCEE candidates in recorded history to take their exam with their face masks on. All because of SARS! You, my beloved graduates, have been very unlucky to take this important exam under the threat of this deadly virus. Many of you may worry that this will affect your exam results, not to mention the constant anxiety about being struck down by the disease.

But learning from the story of a half-cup of water, we may also argue that you were very lucky to encounter SARS at this critical moment in life. Whether something is a loss or a gain depends on your perspective. The baptism of SARS did not beat you but rather galvanised your mind and spirit and purified your soul. It has brought out the best of human compassion among the people of Hong Kong, and likewise it has brought home to you the key to lifelong success, i.e. to fight and never to yield. In the years you spent at St Paul's Co-ed. I believe we have armoured you with Faith, Hope and Love. Now off you should go to war to defend peace, justice, equality and human dignity. With these weapons in your hands, you will be invincible.

I hope we have given you the best and you will be the best.

■Editor's Note

Galvanise即「激起」,可加into補充激發的行動,如The government's lack of consultations galvanised the opposition camp into protests。
